Issues analysis: Identity Theft
by Kate Dornin The issue I have chosen is Identity theft. Identity theft is not very well known and is a terrifying and alarming issue. Identity theft is when someone uses your personal information without your knowledge to commit fraud or theft. It includes someone getting your name, address, social security number and credit card number or other confidential information. When people get access to the basic information needed to apply for different services, eg credit cards and phone services. Identity theft is a massive issue because the person who steals your identity can create enormous bills for you and make problems, for example credit card bills, debt to the companies who loaned the money, eg banks. These companies assume you incurred this debt and often take legal action. Offline approaches are more common, but people can steal your identity online too. The most common way of stealing someone’s identity is taking their mail. You can’t protect yourself from identity theft 100%, but there are numerous things you can to do prevent it. §Carry information you absolutely need, leave bank and social security cards and numbers at home §Put a lock on your mailbox, or have a sturdy mailbox §Pick up your mail early in the day so it’s not sitting in your mailbox all day long §Don’t allow mail to build up §Know when your bills are due, if it’s late ring up and ask why §Never give information to random companies or call centers. Actual companies never ask for these sorts of information §Don’t post private information online §Don’t give your credit card number to any unknown sites §Have different passwords for different online accounts §Use anti-virus software and update it frequently §Personal firewall is also helpful
You can know if you’re a victim of identity theft by tracking your credit history. The majority of people who are victims find out when it’s too late. Identity theft is not very common, but it is becoming an increasing issue. It doesn’t cost much to protect yourself and is certainly cheaper than becoming a victim.
